id say dont be afraid to work with really messy and thick shapes. I like to clean up sketches rather than draw new lines. So you basically sculpt your drawing instead of working with layers:)
allowing it to look ugly makes it very relaxed to draw too. So dont be afraid if it looks wonky in the start. Trust the process!
